Why these two appear together

Two hidden patterns in one grid make this the purest counting drill available here. Neither can be found by looking at what cells contain, because in both cases the cells involved are cluttered with other candidates and look entirely ordinary. Both have to be found by asking, for each digit still missing from a unit, which cells could hold it.

Do that once per unit and both patterns fall out of the same pass: two digits sharing a two-cell footprint is a Hidden Pair, three digits sharing a three-cell footprint is a Hidden Triplet. Both then prune inward, removing every other candidate from the cells involved.

One thing to watch for is that the pair often fires first and simplifies the triplet out of existence — after the pair's eliminations, what was a Hidden Triplet may be resolvable as something smaller. That is not a wasted observation; recognising when a pattern has dissolved is as useful as finding it.

Hidden Triplet + Hidden Pair FAQ

How many Sudoku puzzles combine Hidden Triplet and Hidden Pair?
3,492 puzzles in the Precision Sudoku library have Hidden Triplet and Hidden Pair as their two hardest required techniques (beyond singles), out of a library of 65,284 solver-verified puzzles.
What is the single habit these puzzles are training?
Counting where each missing digit can go in a unit, rather than reading what each cell contains. One complete pass of that kind surfaces Hidden Singles, Hidden Pairs and Hidden Triplets together, because all three are patterns in the same footprint data.
Why do hidden patterns hide in busy cells?
Because that is what makes them hidden. The digits are confined to a small set of cells, but those cells still carry other candidates, so nothing about their appearance signals the pattern. Only the count of possible homes per digit reveals it.
