Why practise techniques in pairs

Drilling one technique at a time is the right way to learn a pattern, but it quietly makes the search easier than it will ever be on a real board. When you open a page titled “X-Wing practice”, you already know what you are looking for, and half the difficulty of an X-Wing is not knowing in advance that there is one.

Combination pages restore some of that difficulty without going all the way back to random puzzles. Each puzzle here needs two named advanced techniques, so you know the search space but not the answer — you still have to work out which pattern is available now, and in what order to apply them. That ordering question is most of what separates a solver who knows the techniques from one who can use them.

How to use these pages

  • Learn both techniques first. A combination page is not the place to meet a pattern for the first time. Work the individual practice sets until each one is comfortable in isolation.
  • Exhaust the cheap moves before either technique. Every puzzle here still opens with singles and usually needs several rounds of them between the two hard steps. Reaching for the advanced pattern early is the most common way to waste time on these.
  • Expect the two steps to be separated. Typically one technique breaks the initial stall, a cascade of singles follows, and the second technique is needed much later on a very different-looking board. They rarely sit next to each other.
  • Name the move before you make it. If you cannot say which technique you are applying and why, you are pattern-matching on appearance rather than reasoning, and it will not transfer to an unlabelled puzzle.

What the pairings mean

Each page collects puzzles whose two hardest required techniques are exactly the pair named. That is a stronger guarantee than “contains both”: it means the puzzle cannot be finished without either one, and it also means nothing harder than the pair is ever required. There is no hidden third pattern waiting at step forty.

The counts beside each pairing are the honest population of the library, which is why they vary so much. Some combinations are common because the techniques often arise from similar grid conditions; others are rare because a puzzle difficult enough to need one usually ends up needing something else along the way. Once pairs feel routine, the natural next step is the hardest puzzles, where the peak required technique is as high as the library goes, or the technique picker, where you can specify any combination you like rather than choosing from the common ones.
