Why these two appear together

These two techniques ask you to count the same thing in two completely different frames, which is what makes the combination worth drilling. A Hidden Pair is found by counting where each missing digit can go inside one unit; an X-Wing is found by counting where a single digit can go across several lines at once. Both are counting-by-digit rather than reading-by-cell — the habit is shared, the scope is not.

In practice the Hidden Pair almost always fires first, and it is usually what makes the X-Wing visible. Stripping the extra candidates out of the pair's two cells reduces how many homes other digits have in those lines, and a digit that previously had three or four positions in a row can drop to exactly two. That is precisely the condition an X-Wing needs, so the sequence is rarely reversible.
